NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that goaltender Owen Johansson and forward Kyle Liinimaa of the Rayside-Balfour Canadians along with Soo Eagles forward Jacob Palmerio have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Nov. 13.
OWEN JOHANSSON, (G) RAYSIDE-BALFOUR CANADIANS – In three starts, on consecutive nights, for Rayside-Balfour, the 19-year-old native of St-Lazare, Que., won each of them helping the Canadians vault into first place in the NOJHL’s West Division.
Johansson began by stopping 33 of the 35 shots he faced Friday in his club’s road victory as Espanola.
Heading home Saturday the Rayside-Balfour goalkeeper turned aside 24 of the 25 attempts fired his way helping his side complete a home-and-home sweep of the Express.
Getting the nod once again Sunday evening in Elliot Lake, Johansson capped off his week with 27 stops while allowing just one against as the Canadians defeated the Wildcats at Centennial Arena.
Along with the trio of triumphs he posted a solid 1.66 goals-against average for the week and a .943 save percentage.
JACOB PALMERIO, (F) SOO EAGLES – Palmerio was instrumental for the Eagles over the weekend playing a key role in the club’s two wins while helping his team run their home winning streak at Pullar Stadium to seven in the process.
The 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., product started off by doling out a pair of assists Friday in an overtime win over their cross-border rivals, the Soo Thunderbirds.
Palmerio then tallied twice, including the game-winner, and set-up another marker Saturday as the Eagles rolled over the Timmins Rock.
Riding a four-game point streak as well as having etched his name on the scoresheet in seven of his past eight outings, the Eagles forward now has 10 goals and as many assists through 25 games.
KYLE LIINAMAA, (F) RAYSIDE-BALFOUR CANADIANS – Liinimaa was the ultimate set-up man for the Canadians in their weekend victories as he supplied assists on all three game-winning goals his side scored.
The 18-year-old NOJHL rookie had two helpers in Friday’s decision at Espanola.
Saturday saw the Sudbury native tee up the game-winner with just 12 seconds left in regulation in a late win over the Express.
Liinimaa then capped off his week by assisting on the eventual difference maker yet again as Rayside-Balfour won at Elliot Lake.
With points in four straight, the RBC forward has 12 in total through his first 24 league contests, including three tallies.
