SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles are flying on home ice, scoring at a high rate of late as they went on to derail the Espanola Express 10-1 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Pullar Stadium.
After striking for nine goals last week in a one-sided triumph over Elliot Lake, Sault Ste. Marie was firing on all cylinders once again in this one.
The Eagles converted on special teams twice in the first frame beginning with Nick Techel, who struck shorthanded, and collected his fourth of the season for Sault Ste. Marie.
A Christian Bardarson power play marker upped the home team’s lead after one period of play.
The Eagles took off from there and picked up five more markers in the second stanza to blow it open.
George Orafanos connected for a pair in the session for the Soo while Bardarson, Kobe Keller and Jake Palmerio supplied singles.
The Eagles kept coming in the third as Keller, Chris Banser and Matt Capisciolto all found the back of the net before Cole Csorbay scored late for Espanola to break Carter McPhail’s shutout bid.
Techel, Kyle Quinn and Kellen Tharaldson all chipped in with three assists for the winners in the romp.
McPhail finished with 21 stops to pick up the win for the Soo.
Adam Scott started in net for the Express and suffered the loss making 22 saves on 27 attempts while Jacob Hutchings handled 35 of 40 in relief.
