Wildcats win 1st of 2 in Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Taking to the ice in a rare doubleheader in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason play at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., the Elliot Lake Wildcats defeated the Soo Eagles 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats will now meet the Soo Thunderbirds at 8 p.m. in their second game of the day back at John Rhodes.

Playing two 25-minute periods, it was Elliot Lake that opened the scoring early as Spencer MacLean finished off a feed from Shane Woolsey at 1:28.

The Eagles from Michigan tied late in the initial session on a Ryan Morse marker with Sam Rapport drawing the lone assist.

The Wildcats struck twice in a span of one minute and 49 seconds to go up 3-1 as Jason Wilson and Ryan Hackett both found the mark for Elliot Lake.

Roger Powers pulled the Eagles to within one with a power play effort with 1:38 remaining, but it would turn out to be the final goal of the contest.

Shots on goal favoured Elliot Lake 27-25 with Aaron Mackay picking up the win and Jack Deines the loss.
