SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – An Anthony Boyes effort in the fourth round of the shootout proved to be the only one scored in extra attempts as the Powassan Voodoos went on to edge the Soo Eagles 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Pullar Stadium.
Some quality work by both the night’s starting goaltenders kept it scoreless after one period as the efforts of the Eagles’ Dalton Hoornstra and the Voodoos’ Logan Coates saw both make multiple solid saves in the session.
Heading to the middle frame, it was the Soo who eventually broke the stalemate past the midway point of the contest when Harmon Esch was credited with putting in a falling puck off an Alex Povorozniouk in close backhand chance.
Powassan got that back at 18:10 when Caden Dubreuil took a feed from Caleb Dawson and then snapped a shot past Hornstra.
Not down there, the visitors took a 2-1 lead into the intermission, thanks to Ryan Saginaw, who was set-up down low by Dawson and promptly pumped in his chance with 28 seconds remaining.
In the third, the Soo pulled even moments into a man advantage as Povorozniouk moved in from the right point and buried his opportunity into the corner of the net, through a screen, to send it to OT.
Neither side would connect in the five-minute OT, thus sending it to the shootout to determine a winner.
There, Boyes picked up the only tally as he came in, controlled a bouncing puck, before wiring a low shot into the bottom left corner to give the guests the edge.
Coates then stopped the Soo’s final chance to secure the narrow road victory.
With the outcome, the Voodoos improve to 10-3-1-1 on the campaign while with a point in defeat, the Eagles dipped to 10-5-1-2.
