Solid start helps send Eagles over Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Soo Eagles jumped out to a three-goal first period lead and never trailed as they went on to defeat the Espanola Express 4-2 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Friday night at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Sault Ste. Marie started their quick outburst halfway through the opening frame thanks to Gianni Vitali’s third tally of the season.

It was more Eagles at 15:25 as Jake Saxton put the visitors up by the pair.

The Soo struck again just over a minute later thanks to Nick Techel’s 22nd to make it 3-0.

Espanola did get one back before the first was complete as Jace Pitawanakwat supplied his second of the campaign with assists going to Jackson Heacock and Tyler Bourassa.

The Eagles went back up by three early in the middle session when William Casey connected two and a half minutes into the frame.

It stayed 4-1 into the third period when the Express picked up the final goal of the evening off the stick of Jackson Thomas at 3:02 to round things out offensively.

Mikey Butcher aided the Soo cause with two assists on the night.

Carter McPhail saw 34 shots fired his way to pick-up the win for the Eagles while Adam Scott made 37 stops in defeat for Espanola.
