McPhail posts league-best 4th shutout as Eagles blank Wildcats

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Soo Eagles goalkeeper Carter McPhail stopped all 22 shots he faced to post his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Saturday night at Pullar Stadium.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Sault Ste. Marie struck first in the middle session as Brendan Blair picked up his fourth of the season at 15:28.

The Eagles added another two and a half minutes later thanks to William Casey to put them up by a pair after 40 minutes.

It stayed that way until the late going in regulation when Gianni Vitalli wrapped things up with a shorthanded marker into an empty net at 18:33 to secure the win.

Wildcats’ goaltender Logan Sawka was busy in the Elliot Lake net as he saw 45 shots fired his way in defeat for the Wildcats.
