SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – Drew Dellies scored three times to lead the hometown Soo Eagles to a convincing 8-4 win over the Elliot Lake Vikings at the Pullar Stadium on Wednesday night.
Zach Sweitzer also added a pair of goals for the Eagles while Benjamin Pouliot had 1 goal and 2 assists in the win.
Nate Dugwell led the Vikings, who have only one point in their last 18 games, with a pair of goals.
Late first the Eagles converted as Drew Dellies chipped home his 5th on a rebound in the slot at 15:25 to give the home squad a 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The Eagles got the offence rolling in the middle frame as they fired home five goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead after 2 periods of play.
Dellies netted his second of the game on a nice backdoor pass from Landon Stevens which made it 2-0 Eagles.
Just over two minutes later, Jack Ohlund netted his 10th on a nice passing play on a 3 on 2 which made it 3-0.
Landon Stevens put home a shot all alone in the slot during 4 on 4 action which increased the Eagles lead to 4-0 at 9:22.
Then it’s Benjamin Pouliot who got the puck over the Zach Sweitzer who made no mistake on a 2 on 2 rush beating Vikings goalie Braydon Garnhart.
The Vikings finally got on the scoresheet on a nice individual effort by Nate Dugwell. The Scarborough product flew down the left wing, drove the net and slipped the puck through the legs of Eagles starter Michael Shelley to make it 5-1 at 12:10 of a busy second period of scoring.
Pouliot made it 6-1 with his 21st of the campaign at 15:03 to finish off a six-goal second period.
Dugwell cut the lead to 6-2 with his second of the game at 3:01 of the third.
Nathan Marincola netted his 11th to make it 6-3 as the Vikings made a third period push.
However, two minutes after that goal, Dellies completed his hat trick on an assist from Nolan Hendry at 8:08. Hendry finished the night with four assists as well for the Eagles.
Not long after that Gavin McLenaghan cut the lead to 7-4 as he scored his 17th for the Vikings.
Sweitzer notched his second of the game to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
The Eagles improve to 25-16-1-2 while the Vikings drop to 5-32-1-4.
