Eagles rally past Red Wings

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Trailing by three midway through the contest, the Soo Eagles stormed back and rallied for a 4-3 win over the Elliot Lake Red Wings Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League neutral site contest held at Rankin Arena.

The Red Wings jumped to the early lead by striking twice before the game was 10 minutes in to gain the upper hand.

Josh Tomasi picked up the first one for Elliot Lake at 6:24 as he was sent in alone on a breakaway and made no mistake zipping a shot past Eagles’ starter Logan Raffaele.

They then went up by a pair half-way through the first when Jovani Moses finished off a quick give-and-go with Hayden Cattani that began behind the net.

Moving to period No. 2, the Red Wings’ Jace Simington-Lesanko clicked on the power play by cranking a one-timer from the right point that beat Raffaele.

Needing a boost, Sault Ste. Marie got it from their captain Jack Mortson as he scored for a sixth straight outing by knocking one in off a three-way passing play from the right on Elliot Lake netminder Colton Donaldson.

Getting one assist on the play was Chase Tallaire, who in doing so, collected a point in his seventh straight game.

The Eagles then made it 3-2, early in the third as Tallaire lobbed a back hand over a sprawled Donaldson from close range.

Not done there, the Soo picked up a shorthanded tally as Michael Szlag darted down the left wing and went upstairs to knot the affair at 3-3.

Some nice puck movement during a man advantage helped the Eagles take the lead as Benjamin Moak’s first NOJHL goal from in close completed the work of teammates Trevor Davis and Seth Ferguson.

The Red Wings pulled their netminder in the late going for an extra attacker, however the Soo held firm to secure the come from behind victory.

Raffaele made 24 saves in his NOJHL debut to collect the win while Donaldson faced 47 attempts in defeat.
