Beavers complete home-and-home sweep of Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Tristen Bernard’s second goal of the game 15:13 into the middle stanza proved to be the winner as the Blind River Beavers finished off a weekend home-and-home sweep of the Soo Eagles Saturday with a 5-2 win in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Pullar Stadium.

The contest was scoreless until the latter stages of the opening period when Bernard put the Beavers on the board at 17:44.

Sault Ste. Maire came right back and notched the equalizer 44 seconds later as Chris Lutz collected his seventh of the season to knot the affair at 1-1.

Blind River’s Brock Brown and Bernard both connected in the second to put the visitors up 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Special teams allowed the Beavers to extend their cushion early in the final frame when Yianni Liarakos notched his team-leading 29th of the campaign during a man advantage opportunity 23 seconds into the session.

Chris Murphy reached the 20-goal plateau for the Eagles at 8:12 of the third as he finished off a Soo power play chance.

However Rockford Copiskey found the back of the net for a second straight night, two minutes later, to round out the night’s scoring.

Cole Peck picked up two assists for Blind River in the win.

Myles Hektor registered the victory for the Beavers making 34 stops along the way helping his side win for a 25th time in 2016-17.

Kade Phipps started for the Eagles and suffered the loss allowing three against on 19 attempts while Jack Deines handled 10 of 12 in third period relief.
