Thunderbirds fire 60 shots on net in victory over Eagles
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds pumped 60 shots on Soo Eagles netminder Jack Hickey, but managed to get only four past him in a 4-1 victory over the rivals Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Saturday at Essar Centre
The Thunderbirds came out flying to open the contest as they fired 23 attempts on Hickey, but could not solve the Eagles goalkeeper through 20 minutes of play.
It was the Eagles who got on the board first as Alex DiBacco tallied for a 10th time this season as his effort eluded T-Birds starter Connor Ryckman at 3:26 of the second.
The home side did come right back however and notch the equalizer 41 seconds later on Matthew Caruso’s 26th of the campaign.
Jaren Bellini put the Thunderbirds up 2-1 at 7:02 of the stanza as his 24th overall also proved to be his seventh game-winning goal in 2015-16.
Darian Pilon and Aidan Salerno added third period markers for the T-Birds to round out the scoring.
Ryckman finished with 14 saves in a winning cause while Hickey was stellar for the Eagles despite the defeat.
