SUDBURY, Ont. – Riding the strength of a season-high six power play goals, the Greater Sudbury Cubs went on to take down the Soo Eagles 6-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Thursday evening at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Special teams played a part in all three tallies in the first period as the Cubs took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Back-to-back extra-man efforts by Greater Sudbury, midway through the frame, gave them an early edge with markers from Briir Long and Owen King, in beating Sault Ste. Marie starter Jace Knoerle.
King extended a point streak to 10 by contributing on each of his club’s initial two goals, while Mason Walker is now on a 12-game heater with an assist.
The Eagles got one back while up a skater themselves with 30 seconds left in the session as Jacob Peterson notched his 13th of the season, with help from Lucas Caulfield.
Heading to the second stanza, Nolan Nemecek tied it for the Soo at 2:52 by banging in his 22nd of the year, as he put one past Cubs’ netminder Iain Wintle.
Still knotted into the third, the home side broke it open with a four-pack in under a six-minute span, all via the power play, to cruise to victory.
After Walker and Spencer Horgan, who now has points in nine consecutive outings, connected 27 seconds apart, Long and Caden Dubreuil also converted while the Soo were shorthanded once more wrap-up the result.
The six tallies while on the man advantage were the most by any NOJHL team, in a single game, this season.
With the outcome, the Cubs improve to a league-best 38-8-3-2 overall while with the loss, the Eagles fall to 23-25-1-2.
