NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that the forward trio of Jack Mortson (Soo Eagles); Nolan Newton (Greater Sudbury Cubs) and Nicholas Frederick (Timmins Rock) have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending Oct. 2.

JACK MORTSON, (F) SOO EAGLES – In two appearances last week, the 20-year-old Westland, Mich., product collected points on six of the seven goals the Eagles notched.

He scored once and helped set-up two others in a narrow road setback at Greater Sudbury, then tallied twice, including picking up the game-winner, and added an assist as Sault Ste. Marie won in Espanola.

Riding a five-game point streak heading into Day 1 of the NOJHL Showcase Tuesday, Mortson sits tied for seventh in league scoring with 11 points, including six tallies.

NOLAN NEWTON, (F) GREATER SUDBURY CUBS – The first-year Cubs’ forward notched a goal and added an assist in each of Greater Sudbury’s victories last week.

The 16-year-old from French River recorded the game-winner against the Soo Eagles on a one-timer from the slot, then set-up the decider in a decision over the Soo Thunderbirds as part of his accomplishments.

Newton currently leads all NOJHL rookies in offensive production with eight points, including four markers, two of which have been deciders.

NICHOLAS FREDERICK, (F) TIMMINS ROCK – In his lone contest during the time frame, Frederick supplied a league-best four points in a Timmins triumph at Powassan.

The 20-year-old from North Vancouver, B.C., had a goal and assisted on three others, featuring one on the eventual difference maker, to help secure the away triumph versus the Voodoos.

Frederick has been stellar since the season began, as he has points in all eight outings the Rock have played to date, with 14 overall, on seven goals and as many assists, which places him fifth in NOJHL scoring.
