Eagles strike for 7 in 2nd to soar past Wildcats

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles were certainly flying Saturday as they erupted for seven second period goals en route to a 9-1 drubbing of the Elliot Lake Wildcats in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Pullar Stadium.

Sault Ste. Marie also started strong in this one grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on tallies from Kobe Keller and Nick Techel.

The Eagles then blew it open in the middle stanza as they struck for the seven unanswered markers to take full control of the contest.

Four goals in just over five minutes set the tone for the Michigan Soo as they chased Elliot Lake starter Allan Menary on offensive efforts from Jake Palmerio, shorthanded, Christian Bardarson and Kellen Tharalson, via the power play, as well as Techel’s second at even strength.

Parker Simpson entered the contest for the Wildcats after that, but he was greeted with three against in net by the Eagles with Keller, Jake Lamberty and Kyle Quinn extending the onslaught.

The visitors would break Soo goalkeeper Carter McPhail’s shutout bid with 11:43 to go as Jacob Kelly scored on a man advantage opportunity to round out the night’s scoring.

Techel and Keller chipped in with two assists apiece to cap off four-point nights for the winners.

McPhail finished with 32 saves to record the win for the Eagles.

Menary suffered the loss making 21 stops on 27 attempts for the Eagles while Simpson handled 19 of 22 in relief.
