SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles broke open a close game by scoring six times in the third period to defeat the Elliot Lake Wildcats 8-0 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Friday at Pullar Stadium.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Sault Ste. Marie opened the night’s scoring 14:58 into the middle stanza as Charley Hanewall picked up his second goal of the season with assists going to George Orfanos and Alec Schwab.
The Eagles then picked up a late power play in the frame and extended their lead with captain Brendan Blair converting during the man advantage opportunity to put the home side up by a pair.
The Soo then broke it open in the third period by striking six times, including five in a three-and-a-half-minute span early, in the session to help them win going away.
Nathan Solis started the offensive outburst with his first in league play at 1:53 followed by goals in rapid succession from Hayden Clark, Blair and Solis again followed by Kyle Quinn.
Caleb Wood then wrapped up the onslaught with his team-leading 14th as he converted during a power play.
Orfanos and Kobe Kellar finished with three assists apiece in the romp with Schwab dishing out a pair of helpers.
Shane Brancato stopped all 33 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season.
Dominic Boily suffered the loss for the Wildcats allowing six against on 54 shots while Justin Vertesi gave up two on five attempts in relief.
