Eagles soar over Express
ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Soo Eagles used a well-balanced offensive attack getting a pair of goals from Gord Helmuth and seven others from various skaters to help them soar past the Espanola Express 9-3 Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at the Regional Recreation Complex.
The Michigan-based Sault Ste. Marie side took control early in the contest grabbing a 3-0 lead after one period of play on markers by Evan Ketner, Chris Skinner and Landon Hubbard, who notched his while his club, was shorthanded.
Jacob Palmerio made it 4-0 seven and half minutes into the middle session while teammate Jake Saxton bagged his 10th of the season at 13:08.
Joel Grandbois ran his goal total to 12 as he got one back for Espnaola just over two minutes later.
The Eagles Helmuth and Charlie Venedam of the Express then traded tallies in the latter stages of the stanza to make it a 7-2 score in favour of the visitors through two.
Reed Gregory added to the Soo lead early in the third before Grandbois picked up his second of the evening and 13th overall for Espanola at 3:25.
Roman Gaudet then rounded out the scoring to complete the one-sided decision for the Eagles.
Jack Hickey made 29 saves to earn the win for the Soo.
Kevin Labelle started for the Express and suffered the loss while Aaron Callan also saw time in relief as the duo combined to face 41 shots in the setback.
