Strong start sends Eagles past Crunch

SAULT STE. MARE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles continued to soar offensively on home ice as they racked up another five markers for as they went on to defeat the Cochrane Crunch 5-1 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Pullar Stadium.

Already pacing the NOJHL in goals scored on home ice, the Eagles comminuted their offensive success at Pullar Stadium by soaring out to a 3-0 lead before the contest was 12 minutes old.

Kobe Keller started the early outburst at 4:46 before teammates Mihali See, with his first in the league, and Jacob Palmerio added additional markers to set the tone for Sault Ste. Marie and see Cochrane replace starter Taylor Unruh in favour of Shayne Battler.

The barrage continued for the Eagles however with Palmerio adding another with 15 seconds left in the frame to put them up by four.

Uhruh returned to begin the middle stanza, but it continued the Eagles’ way early in the period when Keller collected his second of the night 31 seconds in to make it 5-0.

The Crunch did get one back late in the frame during a power play as Austin Stauffer stuffed in his sixth of season with 44 seconds left in the frame.

Action in the final frame was scoreless as the Soo secured the decision.

Nick Techel, Christian Bardarson and Kellen Tharaldson all had two assists for the winners.

Despite the score, Soo starter Carter McPhail was extremely busy on the night making 47 stops to pick up the win for the Eagles.

Unruh suffered the loss allowing four against on 25 attempts while Battler saved three of four in relief.
