Eagles win 3rd straight

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles stormed back from a one-goal deficit in the latter stages of the third period and notched four unanswered markers to pull out an 8-5 triumph over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Wednesday evening at Pullar Stadium.

Both clubs came out firing offensively in the opening stanza combining for five tallies, including three by the Eagles.

Zack Parrott and Bradley Hofelich staked Sault Ste. Marie to a 2-0 lead before Rayside-Balfour responded with efforts supplied by Logan Lefebvre and Tristan Simm.

Roman Gaudet put the Soo back on top at 14:10 of the first as they took that cushion into the middle session.

The Canadians drew level again early in the second courtesy of Simm, who collected his ninth of the campaign with his multi-goal night.

Jacob Palmerio answered that for the Eagles at 7:19 with his eighth of the campaign.

In the third, Rayside-Balfour saw Makenzie MacMillan strike on the power play midway through the period and teammate Sheehan Kirkwood add one at even strength 33 seconds later to put the guests in front 5-4.

The Soo’s Reed Gregory knotted the affair, via the power play, with 5:24 to go then Palmerio struck in quick order supplying the eventual winner moments later.

Chris Murphy added some insurance with just over two minutes left before Gordon Helmeth iced it in the waning moments with an empty netter to round out the night’s scoring.

Murphy, Gregory, Alex DiBacco and Chris Skinner had two assists apiece for the Eagles while Otis Goldman had a trio of helpers for the Canadians.

The Soo outshot Rayside-Balfour 54-38 in the contest with Jack Deines helping his side win their third straight NOJHL contest while Jessie Morin suffered the loss.
